• What You Need to Know About Lice

    magnified, head lice and nits

Head lice ( Ukus) infestations have reached epidemic porportions. Head lice are highly contagious and are spread primarily through head to head contact with someone who has head lice. For most parents, head lice is a nightmare that won't away, no matter how many pesticides are used, or how much "nitpicking" or housecleaning is done.

Head lice infestations are more common than ever, but there's good news.
Accurate lice information is hard to find. Traditional treatments often fall short, and nit removal tools can be ineffective. But don’t worry—we’re here to help.

    How Lice Spread

Lice spread through head-to-head contact or by sharing personal items like hats, brushes, or pillows. They can’t jump or fly—they only crawl quickly from one person to another. The sooner you act, the easier it is to stop the spread.

How to Spot Lice and Nits

    1. Viable Nits (Eggs):
    • Oval, and brownish or clear. and very small - (1/20 of an inch)
    • They are laid and stick to the hair about 1/8 to ¼ inch from the scalp. As the hair grows, the nit gets farther and farther from the scalp.
    1. Empty Egg Cases:
    • Clear with a slight brown outline.
    1. Live Adult Lice:
    • Grayish or brown bugs, 1/20 of an inch. ( rarely black in color)
    • These crawl from one head to another.
    1. Baby Lice (Nymphs):
    • Tiny, brown or red dots with clear legs. These are newly hatched lice. They are very small. The size of a pin head.

The Lice Life Cycle: Why Early Treatment Matters

Head lice live about 30 days. The female louse lays 3-5 eggs every day, and in her lifetime, she can lay 100 eggs.

    • Nits hatch in 7-10 days. In about 10 days, they become adult lice that can mate and start the cycle again.
    • This is why early treatment is key to stopping the spread.

How to Clean and Treat for Lice

Lice can only survive for 24 hours off the head, so cleaning is simple:

    • Wash bed linens and clothing: Put them in a hot dryer for 20 minutes to kill lice.
    • Vacuum: furniture, plush toys, and car seats to remove fallen lice.
    • Nitpicking: Make sure to remove every last egg to fully get rid of the lice.
