Diabetes is curable says Medical Doctor
A recent series of Advertiser articles on the topic of diabetes included its complications but hardly mentioned that the condition is almost completely preventable and largely curable without drugs. A new 58 minute illustrated video featuring internationally recognized nutritionist Brenda Davis, R.D. explaining a successful effort in the Marshall Islands based on exercise and a whole food vegan diet is now on line at http://vsh.voip-info.org/Davis4.html
Those patients who went off their Marshallese diet of refined carbohydrates, Spam, and soft drinks and followed her recommendations and culinary instructions, brought down their weight, fasting blood sugar, serum lipids, and restored their exercise tolerance.
For those on the standard American diet the transition may seem formidable. Nevertheless, it is possible. For those who are able to resist social pressure and the blandishments of the processed food industry, the results are the restoration of health and well being. In contemplating the treatment of type II diabetes everyone involved, regardless of their therapeutic choices, should at least understand that it is a disease of lifestyle and that its only real cure is a major lifestyle change.
Sincerely,
William Harris, M.D.

Kauai Diabetes Kauai Diabetes Help
Letter to the Editor
I have been helping families eliminate head lice (ukus) naturally
for over 9 years and I am all too familar with hearing mothers express despair
that despite the many bottles of lice insecticides they've poured onto their
children's heads, the head lice and nits are still there. I have seen for myself
the huge gap that sometimes exists between 'medical information' and what works.
On August 11, 2007, at Lydgate park, Kauai, there will be the Summer Bash for
Type 2 Diabetes. Since so many children here will develop diabetes if they don't
change their diets,I feel it is important for everyone to know that a new book
could save their life: Dr. Neal Barnards Program for Reversing Diabetes:
The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes Without Drugs.
You see, many people are not aware that diabetes is actually reversible.
People are not told that by avoiding certain foods, diabetes can actually be
reserved, and all medications can be discontinued.
This fact does not benefit the financial bottom line for pharmacies, medical
doctors, and drug sales who will be missing out on sick, diabetic customers
for life.
Published in the Aug. 2006 issue of Diabetes Care, that study found Dr. Barnards
program to be three times more effective than the American Diabetes Association
Diet at controlling blood sugar. Rather than just compensate for malfunctioning
insulin, like other treatment plans, Dr. Barnards program helps repair
how the body uses insulin. It also includes helpful tips on adopting a plant-based
diet and more than 50 delicious and easy-to-make recipes. (www.nealbarnard.org/diabetes_book.htm
)
Hawaii's own Dr. Terry Shintani's M.D.s books are also great.
Another medical doctor who understands the importance of a vegan diet is Dr.
Michael Greger M.D. In the newsletter of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii, he
writes the following. Greger writes, " Dr. Benjamin Spock, who was perhaps
the world's most esteemed pediatrician, embraced vegan diets (no meat or dairy)
in his final edition of Baby and Child Care, described as the second
best selling book in history (second only to the bible). Dr. Spoke wrote, "Children
who grow up getting their nutrition from plant foods rather than meats have
a tremendous health advantage. They are less likely to develop weight problems,
diabetes, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer." "
It's worth checking out the lastest edition of Baby and Child Care from
the Library. In it, Dr. Benjamin Spock explains how his life-long health troubles
went away shortly after adopting a vegan diet. On an aside, it would be wonderful
if parent and child advocates would be informed to know to replace their old
Baby and Child Care with the newest one as the information is different.
Here on Kauai, the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii (VSH) has a wonderful vegan
potluck Luncheon and educational Lecture each month. Every time I go, I have
a great time, eat delicious food, and learn a lot. Non-vegetarians, non-vegans,
parents with children, health care workers and doctors in the front lines are
encouraged to attend.
The Potluck luncheons are on the first Sunday of every month at noon at the
Kapaa Neighborhood Center.
We owe it to our children to show them by example to eat plenty "more fruits
and veggies". We will all lose weight, get healthy, and stay healthy. Since
diabetes is reversible, it would be a good idea to find out how.
Best of health,
Karen Tilley
